The Oak Knoll Winery story starts in 1970, when Ronald and Marjorie Vuylsteke moved toward becoming pioneers of Oregon winemaking by establishing the primary winery in Washington County. Around then, there were just a couple of vineyards and a bunch of wineries in all of Oregon!
Ron Vuylsteke's granddad Leonard, a local of Belgium, was a winemaker in the St.- Emilion district of Bordeaux in the mid 1900's. He moved to the United States with his family on one of the last ships ready to make safe section out of Europe just before World War I. Touching base at Ellis Island in New York, the family traversed the nation via train to join relatives who had settled in the farmland of the northern Willamette Valley.
